This series is comprised of files organized chronologically by year and alphabetically within each year. Most correspondence is grouped alphabetically by the sender's last name. However, correspondence was occasionally filed by the sender's first name, law firm, or subject of letter. From 1987 to 1989 the correspondence was filed chronologically by year and month, not alphabetically. Also, there are individuals whose correspondence was not grouped into the alphabetic files. Although these files cover the years Smith served as ABA President, correspondence related to that service is filed in the American Bar Association series. The subjects discussed in this series concern: conferences, fundraising, campaigns, holidays and parties, travel, other law firms, meetings, and letters of appreciation. The files contain both personal and business correspondence. Family correspondence is not separated out, with the exception of one folder containing correspondence from the 1980s and 1990s.
