Florida Agricultural College Library Accession Book
Scope and Content
Series 163 consists of an ALA Standard accession book, 1887 edition, for the Florida Agricultural College Library. The beginning and ending dates are not entered, but early entries are marked "1901-1903 fund". Other entries are marked "Original" and may indicate titles already in the library. Gifts are also noted. The accession book includes serials, as well as monographs, and U.S. government documents. It does not, however, include agricultural documents and titles; the library of the Agricultural Experiment Station was housed separate from the main collection. There are 1184 entries in the book.

Biographical / Historical
Florida Agricultural College (FAC) was established in Lake City, Florida in 1884. FAC was the first land grant college in the state of Florida, and as such received federal and state funding. Because of its land grant status, the FAC also had an agricultural experiment station as a part of the college. FAC was a co-educational school, with a military component required for all male students. In 1903, the FAC’s name was briefly changed to the University of Florida.
In 1905, the Buckman Act reorganized higher education in the state of Florida, and four of the state’s institutions were merged to form the University of the State of Florida (now the University of Florida). The four institutions that were merged were the East Florida Seminary, the Florida Agricultural College (University of Florida at Lake City), the St. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School, and the South Florida Military College.
