Biographical/Historical Note

Hollis H. Holbrook was a faculty member of the Art Department and its first chair. Holbrook was a native of Natuck, Massachusetts and graduated from the Massachusetts School of Art in 1934 and the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1936. He came to Florida in 1938 and retired in 1978. Holbrook's work included both paintings and sculpture. He completed several murals, as well, including the mural in the second floor reading room of the Smathers Library.
