James C. Getzen Papers

Scope and Content

The Getzen papers contain several publications including a copy of the first issue of a campus newspaper, the FAC Cadet Herald, which includes a transcript of his commencement oration. The collection also contains ten letters sent to Getzen including several from a college friend, J. H. Congleton. Congleton mentions that both he and Getzen were members of the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega. Other items include a committee report from a secret student society and cadet drill instructions.

Biographical Note

James C. Getzen was a member of the first graduating class (Class of 1889) of the Florida Agricultural College at Lake City. Getzen was from Fort White and entered the college when it opened in 1884. He was Captain of Company A of the college cadet battalion.
