Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of records related to his work in the Speech and Hearing Clinic in the Florida Center for Clinical Studies, his work with cleft palate disorders, and his association with Florida's exceptional student education programs. Also included in the collection are copies of his publications and publicity files related to his reading of the Christmas Carol.

Biographical/Historical Note
Lester Leonard Hale was born July 6, 1913 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. After a stint as an instructor of speech at Louisiana State University, where he received his Master's (1935) and doctoral (1942) degrees, he joined the University of Florida's Dept. of Speech in 1935. From 1935 to 1939 he was also director of the Florida Players. In 1956, he was appointed Dean of Men and was promoted to Dean of Student Affairs in 1960. He assumed the rank of Vice President for Student Affairs in 1967. He stepped down in 1972 and served for one year as a special advisor in the Office of Academic Affairs surveying the University's career and academic counseling programs. Dean Hale was an accomplished and popular speaker, and his annual reading of the Christmas Carol in the University Auditorium became a campus tradition.
