Biographical/Historical Note
Ida and Lloyd Morgan were the children of Daniel Lewis Morgan and Ida Riddle Morgan. Lloyd was born in 1880 in Clarke County, Alabama. The Morgans moved to Norwalk, Florida, around 1883 and it was there that Ida was born in 1885. Both Ida and Lloyd attended the Florida Agricultural College at Lake City. Lloyd entered sometime around 1897 and graduated with the class of 1901. Ida Morgan followed her older brother in 1902. She attended college there until the school, renamed the University of Florida in 1903, became an all-male school. Ida and several of her classmates then transferred to the Florida State College at Tallahassee. She left FSC in 1905 without completing her degree.
Both Ida and Lloyd would eventually live in Alabama. Lloyd became a businessman and operated the Morgan Lumber and Manufacturing Company in Selma. He died in 1959. Ida married Llewellyn Ludwig Duggar, M.D. in 1907. Dr. Duggar died in l931, and in 1939 she took a position as housemother for a fraternity at the University of Alabama and, later, at Auburn University. In 1958 she married Sydney Herlong, Sr., and returned to Florida. Herlong had previously been married to Ida's college roommate, Cora Knight. Herlong was also the father of Florida congressman Sydney Herlong, Jr. Ida died in 1970 in Leesburg at the age of 84.
