Thomas Alexander Mellon Jr. Diaries
Scope and Content
Each diary contains five consecutive years of entries, with each page separated into five sections corresponding to a different year. Thomas Alexander Mellon Jr. documents the daily life of his immediate family as they travelled around the country. As a close descendent of one of the most influential figures in Pittsburgh society, Mellon is associated with judges, politicians and other prominent Mellon family members. A large portion of these diary entries covers the time the family spent in Florida-especially at their home in Summer Haven, around St. Augustine and Palatka, on trips to Miami, and fishing in Boca Grande. Entries are short and frequently mention people only by family names or nicknames. Other areas covered are Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, the Hamptons (New York), and various national parks.
