Scope and Content
The Records of BACCHUS of the United States, Inc. include materials from the founder of the organization, Gerardo M. Gonzalez. The materials in this collection document the history of the BACCHUS organization from its origination at the University of Florida to its incorporation. The collection contains records detailing the administration of the organization; training materials and research materials used to develop BACCHUS course materials; correspondence to Gonzalez from outside organizations requesting information on BACCHUS and correspondence to Gonzalez recognizing BACCHUS’ positive contributions to other organizations; evaluations of BACCHUS’ programs; numerous publications on alcohol abuse prevention written by Gonzalez and his collaborators; newsletters, press releases, news clippings, and brochures detailing BACCHUS’ accomplishments and goals; and photographs from BACCHUS’ national training seminar in 1980. Also contains U-Matic and VHS tapes with BACCHUS PSAs, news interviews, and other BACCHUS-related content.
The collection is arranged into seven series: “Series 1: Administrative Records, 1976-1986;” “Series 2: Programs, Seminars, Training Materials, Course Development Materials, 1976-1982;” “Series 3: General Correspondence, 1976-1987;” “Series 4: “Evaluations, 1977, 1986;” “Series 5: Publications, 1962-2016;” “Series 6: Press Releases and News Clippings, 1976-1986;” “Series 7: Photographs, 1980;” and “Series 8: Media, 1980-1985.”
This collection is useful for those studying the history of college student organizations’ efforts to educate fellow students on the use of alcohol. It is also useful for those studying the rise of alcohol and substance abuse education on college campuses.

Biographical/Historical Note
Gerardo M. Gonzalez, Ph.D., received his B.A. in Psychology (1973) and his Ph.D. in Counselor Education (1978) from the University of Florida. He served as the Director of the Campus Alcohol Information Center (later the Campus Alcohol and Drug Resource Center) and as Assistant Dean for Student Services at the University of Florida from 1976-1986. He was president, director, and founder of BACCHUS (Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) at the University of Florida in 1976. Dr. Gonzalez is an authority on alcohol abuse at the university level and has lectured and written extensively on alcohol abuse prevention.
From 1986-2000, he served as an Associate Professor, Department of Counselor Education, Professor and Chair of Counselor Education, Associate Dean for Administration and Finance, and Interim Dean of the College of Education at the University of Florida.
From 2000-2015, Dr. Gonzalez served as the Dean of Education at Indiana University. As of 2015, he is now Dean Emeritus and Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University.
