William Slayton Postcard Collection on Gainesville and the University of Florida
Scope and Content
The Gainesville binder contains 95 postcards dating from 1906 to 1967. A portion of the cards were organized by the collector based on times of publication and publishing companies. The remainder are grouped together based on image subject (tourist spots, residential, commercial, and public/government buildings). The binder also contains a few postcards of the Overseas Highway/railway in the Florida Keys and other places in Florida. Also included are brochures for Gainesville and Florida in general.
The collector maintained a specific order for the collection of 168 University of Florida postcards. He included a catalog for the cards; however, the cards are not labeled so the catalog does not give information as to the location of each postcard. The cards appear to be arranged based on publisher and year of production starting with the most recent (1986) to the earliest (1907). The images on the cards include UF sports facilities, union buildings, dormitories, lecture halls, libraries, hospitals, and campus roads. Together, the images depict the campus at different times during the twentieth century.
