Biographical/Historical Note
This patent (8995) was issued to John George Truscott Campbell, a Grocer living at No. 13, Lambeth Hill, Upper Thames Street, in London on June 14, 1841. His invention was a new type of propeller that he dubbed the "Whale Tail or Fluke Propeller." Campbell would later apply for another patent (734) in 1853. He would invent yet another propeller improvement he named the "Curvilinear Propeller."
With the Patent Law Amendment Act of 1852, Britain reformed its patent law. Simplifying the procedure for obtaining patents, reducing fees, and creating one office for the entire United Kingdom, instead of different systems for England, Scotland, and Wales. The new law also instituted a new numbering system. The patent in this collection, pre-dates those reforms by 11 years.
