Scope and Content

This ledger contains a list of John W. Raymond's laborers, several of whom are African American, and a list of their expenses, the goods they purchased, and the work they performed to pay their debts. It also includes a labor contract between Raymond and Robbin Simmons.

Biographical/Historical Note

John W. Raymond was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1827. He worked as a farmer and served in the 23rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. In 1868, he and his wife, Mary, moved to Florida with their children and established a plantation near the community of Louise, in Alachua County. He also served as assessor for the county for three years, until he moved back to Massachusetts in 1877. At the time of his death in 1902, he was working as a farmer and probation officer.
