Scope and Content
The collection is comprised of interviews, manuscripts, correspondence, secondary research, and photographs that supported the publication of McCarthy's work on prominent twentieth-century Florida authors and Greek American communities in Florida. The collection includes transcripts of his interviews with Florida authors, including such notables as Harry Crews, Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, Stetson Kennedy, and Patrick Smith. The information collected on each author includes drafts of oral history interviews, drafts of profiles written by McCarthy on each person that formed the basis for his book (labeled "chapter drafts"), correspondence, photographs, and notes. The material on Greek Americans in Florida includes brochures, correspondence, notes, and photos.

Biographical/Historical Note
Kevin McCarthy, born in 1940, is Professor Emeritus of the University of Florida. Professor McCarthy received his BA in English in 1963 from LaSalle College, his MA in American Literature in 1966, from the University of North Carolina, and his PhD in Linguistics in 1970 from the University of North Carolina. As a member of the UF Department of English from 1969 to 2005, he taught courses in Linguistics, Modern English Structure, History of the English Language, Writing about Football, and the Teaching of English as a Second Language.
His teaching experiences include two years in the Peace Corps in Turkey (1963-1965), one year as a Fulbright Professor in Lebanon (1971-1972), and two years as a Fulbright Professor in Saudi Arabia (1982-1984). He has also taught in the Linguistic Institute of America and in the Aegean Institute (Greece). For 18 years he was the Executive Director of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society where he produced its quarterly newsletter and planned its annual three-day meeting.
He has published 73 books, many of them about Florida, including Florida Lighthouses (1990); The Book Lover's Guide to Florida (1992), Thirty Florida Shipwrecks (1992), African Americans in Florida (1993), The Gators and the Seminoles (1993), Twenty Florida Pirates (1994), Baseball in Florida (1996), Twentieth-Century Florida Authors (1996), Guide to the University of Florida and Gainesville (1997), Native Americans in Florida (1999), Christmas in Florida (2000), and Greek Americans of Florida (2004).

Processing Information
This collection originally contained all of McCarthy's research materials for his book Baseball in Florida (1996) and his book with James P. Jones, The Gators and the Seminoles: Honor, Guts, and Glory (1993). These files were removed and are now held in the vertical file collection in "Subject Files" on "Sports." In addition, background research (clippings, published articles, etc.) about Florida authors were removed and are stored as part of the "Biographical Files" under each author's name.
