Biographical/Historical Note
F. Wayne King (Frederic Wayne) was born in 1936. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Florida in 1957 and 1961, and earned his doctorate from the University of Miami in 1966. He returned to UF to complete post-doctoral work at the Florida State Museum (now the Florida Museum of Natural History) from 1966-67.
In 1967, King joined the New York Zoological Society as an associate curator of herpetology, and advanced there as a curator, chairman of education programs, and director of conservation and environmental education. When he left the New York Zoological Society in 1979, he was the director of zoology and conservation.
King came back to UF in July 1979 as the director of the Florida State Museum and as Professor of Zoology. He served in as Director of the Museum until 1986. He was Professor/Curator of Herpetology at the Museum and Professor of Zoology from 1986 until his retirement.
