Francine Robinson Papers
Scope and Content
The Francine Robinson Papers contain subject files, committee/organization files, and other records belonging to environmental activist Francine Robinson who was active in organizations like the Florida League of Conservation Voters (FLCV), Florida Watch Institute, Friends of the Earth (FOE), Coalition for Responsible Genetic Research (CRGR), Sierra Club, Tree Watch Inc., and others. The collection is arranged into eight series.
Series 1. "Florida Subject Files, 1971-2014" contains alphabetical subject files on various Florida related issues, primarily related to conservation of natural resources and the environment. Many of the files contain newspaper clippings, meeting notes, articles, and correspondence on the subjects.
Series 2. "Local Subject Files, 1964-2013" contains alphabetical subject files specifically related to local issues primarily related to Gainesville and Alachua County. Topics primarily relate to natural resources, the environment, local politics, the Koppers Hazardous Waste site, Newberry Cement Plant, Simpson's Farm, and wetlands conservation. There are extensive and detailed records on the Hogtown Creek Greenway Project from 1992-2002.
Series 3. "Coalition for Responsible Genetic Research (CRGR), 1969-1985" is organized alphabetically and contains subject files, articles, meeting minutes, organization records, correspondence, and other materials related to Francine Robinson's service on the Coalition for Responsible Genetic Research (CRGR). Significant files related to Francine Robinson's work and testimony on Recombinant DNA Technology.
Series 4. "Florida League of Conservation Voters (FLCV), 1979-2004" is organized alphabetically and contains subject files, articles, meeting minutes, legislative scorecards, oral history interviews, press releases, questionnaires, organization records, correspondence, and other materials related to Francine Robinson's long-term service on the Florida League of Conservation Voters (FLCV).
Series 5. "Florida Watch Institute, 1988-1994" is organized alphabetically and contains subject files, correspondence, meeting minutes, organization records, and other materials related to Francine Robinson's service with Florida Watch Institute.
Series 6. "Friends of the Earth (FOE), 1976-2009" is organized alphabetically and contains subject files and correspondence related to Francine Robinson's work with Friends of the Earth (FOE). Some overlap with her service on the Coalition for Responsible Genetic Research (CRGR).
Series 7. "Sierra Club, 1980-2003" is organized alphabetically and contains subject files, correspondence, meeting minutes, newsletters, educational files, awards, and other organization records related to Francine Robinson's work with the Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club.
Series 8. "Tree Watch Inc., 1972-1995" is organized alphabetically and contains subject files, correspondence, meeting minutes, articles, educational files, comparative ordinances from other cities and counties, program and event files, tree planting photographs, and other organization records related to Francine Robinson's work with the Florida Chapter of Tree Watch Inc.

Biographical/Historical Note
Francine Robinson was born in the Bronx, New York on January 24, 1925. She attended Brooklyn College in 1947 and then went on to get her Masters of Education in 1949 at Columbia University. She married Marvin Simring in 1949 in New York City. The couple had four children, Elyse, James, June, and Robert. In 1979 Francine moved from Brooklyn, New York to Gainesville, Florida where Marvin worked as a Dentist specializing in periodontics and taught at the University of Florida. Throughout her life, Francine Robinson was very active in environmental organizations such as the Florida League of Conservation Voters (FLCV), Florida Watch Institute, Friends of the Earth (FOE), Sierra Club, Tree Watch Inc., and others. She also served on the Coalition for Responsible Genetic Research (CRG) and submitted testimony on Recombinant DNA Technology. She passed away on February 12, 2021.
