Scope and Content

The collection is organized in three series in alphabetical order:

Series 1. Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America (OSPAAAL) - Contains posters published from 1960 through 1991 by OSPAAAL. This organization was established in 1966, following the Tricontinental Conference held in Havana, Cuba. The organization advocated for social justice and solidarity with various oppressed countries. The posters contain multilingual captions and illustrate political issues related to Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Series 2. University of Florida - Contains posters of events held by the Center for Latin American Studies, George A. Smathers Libraries, The Institute of Hispanic-Latino Cultures, University Gallery, Jacaré Brazil, Brazilian Music Institute, and other departments at UF. The posters illustrate promotions of exhibition opening events, film screenings, theater performances, musical events, lectures, and cultural performances.

Series 3. General - Contains posters from different regions of the Americas and the Caribbean. The posters illustrate topics related to politics, culture, art, religion, literature, environment, social justice, music, health, films, and tourism.

Abstract

The collection consists of 174 posters published by the Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America (OSPAAAL), different academic departments of the University of Florida, and posters from different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean illustrating topics on politics, religion, art, music, social justice, culture, health, etc.

Acquisition Information

The Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa, and Latin America (OSPAAAL) posters were purchased from Howard Karno Books in 2011.

The University of Florida posters were given to the Latin American and Caribbean Collection department by the Center for Latin American Studies in 2014.
