Biographical/Historical Note

The University of Florida's Department of Materials Science and Engineering began with the efforts of Dr. Frederick Rhines, who left Carnegie Mellon University for the University of Florida in 1959 to start a program for Materials Science. On September 1, 1959. Dr. Rhines founded the Metallurgical Research Laboratory at UF, along with Dr. Bob DeHoff, Dr. Bob Gould, and Dr. Ray Rummel, among others. An academic curriculum was organized in 1960 under the auspices of the Department of Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in Metallurgy. In 1962, with a $20,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, the program was granted permission to award Masters and Ph.D. degrees. In 1965, the Department of Metallurgic and Materials Engineering was established as a separate department from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

When the College of Engineering underwent a reorganization in the early 1970s, the Department was renamed to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1972.

For more information on the Department’s early years, see the “Celebrating 50 Years of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering” booklet in this collection.
