Scope and Contents

The collection contains essays, articles, book reviews, correspondence, research materials, training manuals, documents, photographs, and journals, related to Dr. Russell W. Ramsey's career as a professor at the School of the Americas, at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), and as a military history scholar, and includes materials pertaining to the Maryknoll Society and the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly known as The School of the Americas).

Series 1 - Publications and Writings, contains materials gathered by Dr. Ramsey in four binders where he gathered essays, book reviews, and other documents he wanted to preserve in specific groupings; it also contains booklets such as "Community Resources for the Special Education Teacher, EDH 622", and "WHINSEC Occasional Papers Series 1", essays by Russell Ramsey and other writers he collected, journals, copies of essays and articles from journals and newspapers, and writings, such as "Asymetric Warfare" and "Human, Grace, and John: Three Old Sailors".

Series 2 - Documents and Photographs, contains materials such as letters, documents about the School of the Americas, a memo from General David H. Petraeus, documents from Troy University about WHINSEC classes, documents about Maryknoll missionaries, and copy of a fax written by Dr. Ramsey defending the School of the Americas against allegations of criminal abuse.

Series 3 - Book Reviews, contains book reviews, primarily written by Russell Ramsey, but others Dr. Ramsey gathered for his own research.

Biographical/Historical Note

Russell W. Ramsey, (1935-2022), was a military scholar and historian, and a missionary. He was a professor of Latin American Studies at the School of the Americas, Norwich University, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) at Fort Benning, Georgia State University and Troy University. Dr. Ramsey was an expert on Latin America military and diplomatic issues, as well as in Christian history. During the Vietnam War, Dr. Ramsey commanded a company of airborne infantry. In the 1980s, he held the Latin American Strategy desk for the US Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, as a Reserve Officer during the Central American conflict. He graduated from West Point in 1957 and obtained his Ph.D. in Latin American History at the University of Florida in 1970. He earned a second doctorate in pastoral theology from the Trinity Theological Seminary in 1999. An expert on missionary work, he wrote about early leaders and missionaries in Christian history, including a biography about olympian runner Eric Liddell,God’s Joyful Runner .

Dr. Ramsey was a prolific writer. He wrote twenty-four books; two-hundred and forty-five scholarly refereed articles on Latin American studies, military affairs, and social sciences; three-hundred and fifty-three freelance articles on topics ranging from Olympic Games, military issues, fitness, history, religion, biography, and nostalgia.
