Biographical/Historical Note

The earliest supervision and direction of student organizations on the University of Florida campus was the faculty committee on "student organizations" in 1912-13. Early student organizations on campus included literary societies, Transit club (for engineers), Teacher's Club, Agricultural club, Military organizations, band/orchestra, Glee Club, Athletics clubs, Debate, German club, Dramatic club, fraternities, and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA).

The Office of Student Activities and Involvement began in 1967 under Bill Cross, Assistant Director of the Union and Director of Student Activities. In 1986, the office was instructed to develop student groups who would provide programming in the Union. Over time, the office grew to include such functions as the College Bowl, the gallery at the Union, Leisure courses, student organization registration and advisement, and campus permitting for student organization events.

In 2005, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Student Government advising moved from the Dean of Students Office to the Office of Student Activities. In 2011, the Department of Student Activities and Involvement was created to focus on four areas: Student Organizations and Campus Events, Student Government, Travel and Recreation program, and Sorority and Fraternity Affairs.

As of 2015, the Office of Student Activities and Involvement consists of Student Organizations and Campus Events, Student Government, and Sorority and Fraternity Affairs.
