Scope and Contents

The collection contains documents, photographs, articles, essays, and similar materials pertaining to Dr. Helen Safa's academic career, including archival materials related to her Women in Development digital collection, which can be accessed here: Women in Development(write Helen Safa in the search box)

The collection is arranged in four series:

Series 1 - Publications and Writings, contains booklets, book reviews, articles, newspapers clippings, working copies of essays. The majority of the essays are written by Helen Safa. The series contains some materials about Lourdes Casal, after she passed away.

Series 2 - Documents, contains materials such as a copy of Helen Safa's dissertation, interviews related to her Maidenform research, working drafts of essays, an eulogy to Lourdes Casal, research notes.

Series 3 - Ephemera and Photographs, contains items such as a plaque from Columbia University, a gift for her doctorate, and assorted photographs.

Series 4 - Correspondence, contains letters to, and from, Helen Safa.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. Helen Safa, (1930-2013), was Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. She served as Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida; served as President of the Latin American Studies Association, and taught at Rutgers and Syracuse Universities. In 2007, she received the Kalman Silvert award for lifetime achievement in Latin American Studies. She published monographs, co-edited volumes, and over one hundred articles on gender, race, development, urbanization, poverty, migration, social movements, and state policies. Several of her works are considered classics in urban and feminist anthropology, including her books The Urban Poor of Puerto Rico, and The Myth of the Male Breadwinner: Women and Industrialization in the Caribbean. Dr. Safa is featured in the Women in Development digital collection at the University of Florida Digital Collections.
