Scope and Content
The Marie Virginia Barrantes Piver Family Photographs and Holy Cards Collection contains holy cards, also known as prayer cards, liturgical calendars from the Catholic Church in Cuba, antique photographs and original poems by members of Marie Virginia Barrantes Piver's family. Many of the holy cards are printed in color, some are colored celluloid, and some are in filigree, or laced, style. The photographs are family photos taken primarily in the 1880s, some taken after 1908, and the collection includes the original glass negatives of the photographs taken in Cuba in the 1880s. The collection will be of interest to researchers interested in catholic church history, the history of photography, and Cuba’s history in the late nineteenth century.

Biographical/Historical Note
The collection contains materials related to the family of Marie Virginia Barrantes Piver, including antique photographs taken in Cuba and New York City. Her grandfather's family came from France, the Durege de Beaulieu family, whose coat of arms is included in the collection. The photographs and holy cards were handed down to Marie Virginia Barrantes Piver from her mother, Marie Concepción Durege Barrantes.
