Biographical/Historical Note

History courses were taught at the University of Florida beginning in 1905 with Dr. David Yancey Thomas being the sole professor. In 1910, the University of Florida's Department of History and Economics was established under the College of Arts and Sciences, with its only professor being Enoch Banks, Ph.D.. The department offered courses in history, economics, sociology, and political science until 1914 when Sociology and Political Science became their own department. In 1919, the Department of History and Economics became know as the Department of History and Political Science. This department was dissolved in 1950 and the Department of History was created. From 1972-1978 the Department of History operated under the College of Arts and Sciences’ Division of Humanities. Today, the History Department continues to exist under the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
