Scope and Content

The collection contains essays, publications, correspondence, and research materials, including newspaper clippings and a signed invitation to the first National Congress on the Abakua Societies of Cuba. The collection contains essays that John Dumoulin co-authored with his first wife, Isabel Larguía, a feminist researcher.

The collection is arranged in three series:

Series 1 - Publications and Writings, contains essays written primarily by John Dumoulin about Cuba, women's issues, economic history of Cuba, and articles by other scholars about women's issues.

Series 2 - Documents, contains documents about Isabel Larguía, flyers, certificates of participation in conferences, permissions to conduct research in the Archivo Histórico Nacional in Spain, some documents about ABACUA, including newspaper clippings about the First National Congress of Abakua Societies in Cuba.

Series 3 - Correspondence, contains letters to John Dumoulin and Isabel Larguía, and letters to John Dumoulin.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Dumoulin, (1936-1923), was an anthropologist and historian whose primary field of research was women's studies. In 1960, he visited Cuba and consequently stayed and lived there for many years. He became a member of the Instituto de Ciencias Sociales, where he taught and conducted research. Upon his return to the United States, John Dumoulin married Helen Safa and became an Associate Scholar at the Center for Latin American Studies of the University of Florida.
