Scope and Content

The collection primarily includes architectural plans, sketches, and photos for designs by Robert Ernest, both as a student and a young professional from 1955 to 1962. Many of the projects were proposals only and were not built. The projects include several residences (including his own residence), educational facilities, public buildings, museums, shopping centers, and downtown redevelopment plans. In addition to project drawings and photos, the collection also includes cartoons and illustrations by Ernest, travel sketches from his trip to Europe, materials from his portfolio, design awards, and examples of his artwork used for programs and publications. Also included are inventories and notes about Ernest's collection created by Sarah Mellon and Robert McCarter.

Biographical/Historical Note

Architect Robert G. Ernest earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 1957. After graduation, he traveled in Europe and then he worked in New Orleans in 1957-1958 for Burk, LeBreton & Lamantia Architects. In 1958-1959, he completed the Master's Class at Yale University learning from Paul Rudolph and receiving his Master's degree in 1959. Following graduation, he worked for Mann and Harrover in Memphis in 1959-1960. He relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, in 1960-1961 to supervise construction of the Milam House for Paul Rudolph. Ernest remained in Florida, and he won design awards from Progressive Architecture and Architectural Record for his own Atlantic Beach residence in 1961 and 1962 respectively. He died from an illness in May 1962 at the age of 28.
