Scope and Content

The collection is arranged in two series: Series 1 contains books, booklets, publicity brochures, maps, telephone directories, tourist guides collected on Caribbean countries by Greg Chamberlain. Series 2 contains documents, including research and work documents, and complete copies of the newsletters Une Semaine en Haiti and Haiti-Hebdo edited by journalist Greg Chamberlain. The research documents are primarily about Haiti, but also include materials about the Dominican Republic and Rafael Trujillo.

Biographical/Historical Note

Greg Chamberlain (1942-), was born in Colchester in the United Kingdom. He graduated from the University of Leeds in 1964 with a B.A. in history. During the 1960s he worked for The Yorkshire Post (1964-1965), the UPI/BUP and AP news agencies from 1965 to 1967, and the AFP news agency from 1968 to 1987. He was the Caribbean correspondent for The Guardian (UK, 1970-1993), and wrote for the following publications: Latin America Newsletters (1970-1983), Caribbean Contact (1982-1994), Caribbean Insight (1983-1995), the Miami Herald (1970-1979), Tapia (Trinidad and Tobago, 1974-1983), and the NACLA Report on The Americas (1997-2000).

Mr. Chamberlain was the founder and editor of two weekly newsletters, Une Semaine en Haiti (1991-1992), and Haiti-Hebdo (1992-2000), and co-authored the Dictionary of Central America and the Caribbean (1991), and the Dictionary of South America (1989).

Greg Chamberlain is now retired. During his career, he developed a lifelong passion for the Caribbean which prompted him to collect many of the items in the collection.

The collection contains booklets, travel guides, maps, telephone directories, journals, publications, and documents and research materials on Caribbean countries. The majority of the research documents are about Haiti.
