Biographical/Historical Note

David Paul Chynoweth (December 28, 1940-December 19, 2017) received his MSPH in 1965 and his Ph.D. in 1970, both from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He was a professor of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida. His area of specialty was renewable biomass energy, and he was considered a world expert on composting.

He taught at the University of Michigan, and also worked at the Institute of Gas Technology in Chicago prior to his arrival at the University of Florida in 1969. He worked at the University of Florida until his retirement in 2008, whereupon he was awarded Professor Emeritus status.

Chynoweth is most known for his invention and UF-held patent for SEBAC, which stands for SEquential Batch Anaerobic Composting, used as a means to recover fuel from waste materials.
