Biographical/Historical Note

Rommy Torrico is a formerly undocumented, queer, trans nonbinary visual artist born in Iquique, Chile in 1989 and raised in Florida. They’ve been involved in social movement spaces encompassing (im)migrant, queer and trans rights struggles for two decades. Along with infusing their art with powerful stories from their own life, Torrico's work consistently uplifts the experiences and stories of their communities. Their work thoughtfully delves into the nuances of life and attempts to accurately portray the stories of migrants, queers and trans folks of color beyond a flattened or binary experience. They intentionally incorporate their art as part of the strategy to redistribute power to these communities and they consistently push the limits of what can exist to forge worlds their communities can proudly claim–the worlds we deserve and can be proud of–with the aim of celebrating the historically uncelebrated. In their words, “We own this resilience as part of the journey toward liberation, and this is my way of recognizing that that journey is anything but quiet; it's fiery and dynamic and shameless and angry and hopeful and beautiful.” Torrico’s work has been included in several publications and exhibited at the Getty Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Library of Congress and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía as well as many galleries and museums throughout the Americas and internationally.

Torrico is the co-founder and the Graphics and New Media Director of the Collier County Neighborhood Stories Project since 2011. In 2012, Torrico formed the NOMADA Graphics & Multimedia company, "a small graphics design company specializing in designs for print and web".

Rommy Torrico graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Design, Architecture, in 2011.
