Biographical/Historical Note

The Conservation and Preservation department in the University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries began its work in 1987 when a librarian was sent to the new preservation training program at Columbia University. The department was originally located in Smathers Library on the first and second floor, and moved to the Interim Library Facility in 2012.

The department's original focus was on microfilming brittle books and newspapers, and also focused on conservation work for the Library's print collection. The microfilming projects ended in 2005 as the Libraries' Digital Collections and Digital Support Services began digitizing books and materials held in the Libraries' print collections. Now, the department focuses on conservation work for circulating print materials and rare, non-circulating materials held in Special and Area Studies Collections.

More information on the Conservation and Preservation department can be found in the Spring 2001 issue of the Chapter One Newsletter, and in the Fall 2021 SOURCE magazine .
