Kevin McCarthy Vertical File on Florida Sports and Authors
Scope and Content
The Kevin McCarthy Vertical File is composed of ephemera, newspaper clippings, and articles organized into two main sections: sports, and individuals. The section on individual authors is made up of interviews McCarthy did with authors such as Stetson Kennedy, Harry Crews, and Donn Pearce. The sports section contains background research McCarthy did for his book with James P. Jones, The Gators and the Seminoles: Honor, Guts, and Glory (1993). Other folders contain information about a number of Florida Collegiate Baseball teams, with the schools ranging from Florida State to Broward Community College. This collection also contains information on multiple Minor League Baseball teams in Florida as research for McCarthy’s book Baseball in Florida (1996).

Biographical/Historical Note
Kevin McCarthy, born in 1940, is Professor Emeritus of the University of Florida. McCarthy received his BA in English in 1963 from LaSalle College, his MA in American Literature in 1966, from the University of North Carolina, and his PhD in Linguistics in 1970 from the University of North Carolina. As a member of the UF Department of English from 1969 to 2005, he taught courses in Linguistics, Modern English Structure, History of the English Language, Writing about Football, and the Teaching of English as a Second Language. He has published 35 books, 30 of them about Florida, including Florida Lighthouses (1990), The Book Lover’s Guide to Florida (1992), Thirty Florida Shipwrecks (1992), African Americans in Florida (1993), The Gators and the Seminoles (1993), Twenty Florida Pirates (1994), and Baseball in Florida (1996).
