Biographical/Historical Note

The University of Florida's Sustainability Task Force and the Office of Sustainability was founded in 2001 by UF President Charles E. Young. The Task Force's charge was: 1) Review UF's assets and deficits relative to advancing sustainability in the areas of research, education, campus operations, and community outreach. 2) Facilitate communication about sustainability and what is being done in that area to the community and the UF campus. 3) Survey global institutional trends toward sustainability and identify UF's role in that movement. 4) Make recommendations to the UF president and the faculty to make the university a world-wide leader in sustainability.

The Office of Sustainability was shut down August 4, 2025 as part of a university-wide cost-cutting measure. Its activities were folded into the UF Facilties department.
