Biographical/Historical Note

Etz Hayim (Chaim) Yeshiva was an orthodox yeshiva located in downtown Jerusalem. A yeshiva is an advanced Jewish educational institution focused on the study of religious texts, primarily the Talmud and Torah. Etz Hayim Yeshiva was originally established in 1841 by the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, Shmuel Salant. In 1857 the yeshiva consolidated into a group of buildings adjacent to the Hurva Synagogue, sharing the premises with the Beth Din (rabbinical court) of Jerusalem. The yeshiva expanded in 1908 opening a new location on Jaffa Road. In August 1929, widespread propaganda and incitement in Palestine led to violent riots in several cities. Tensions around access to the Western Wall and false claims that Jews intended to damage the al-Aqsa Mosque sparked massacres in Hebron and Safed, along with attacks and destruction of Jewish property in Jerusalem. The Yeshivah was damaged and its residents temporarily displaced during this unrest, which was eventually suppressed by British forces.
