Scope and Content

There is no provenance for this collection other than labels on the photographs. It includes photos of turpentining operations in Bonifay, Jacksonville, Chiefland, and most importantly the U.S. Naval Stores Station in Olustee, Florida, which experimented with new techniques and equipment for manufacturing turpentine. Other sets of folders show turpentining in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas, including workers’ quarters and operations in pine forest and at stills. Photos of overseas operations are from France and Portugal. Timeframe is generally the 1930s. Many photographs have no information on location but depict buildings, workers, girding techniques (chipping, scraping, dipping), barrel-making, and the blueprints and designs for various stills.
