Biographical/Historical Note

The Gillis and McLean families were among the pioneer families of Walton County, Fla., that originated among Scottish immigrants in North Carolina and eventually settled the Euchee Anna and Knox Hill areas. According to the 1860 and 1870 census of Florida, the branches of the families represented in these papers are: Daniel, Nancy, and Floria Gillis, and James and Catherine McLean, with their children Daniel, James, Jr., John, Duncan, Nancy and Floria. References in correspondence indicate that James McLean and Nancy Gillis were siblings. Other early families of Walton County, the Campbell and McLeod families, were related to the Gillises and McLeans and are mentioned in correspondence.
