Scope and Content

This collection includes thirty-five photographs depicting the aftermath of the earthquake that occurred in Chimbote, Peru in 1970. Most of the photographs have caption labels that describe their scenes, such as images of destroyed infrastructure and also images of the reconstruction.

Biographical/Historical Note

The city of Chimbote, found in the Ancash department of Peru's coastal region, suffered an earthquake on May 31, 1970. The earthquake had a 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale, and its epicenter was located at the Pacific Ocean. The death toll was approximately 70,000 people, and left about 800,000 people homeless. The earthquake also caused landslides from the sides of Nevado Huascaran Mountain which destroyed many villages.

The donor of this collection, Dr. Martha James Hardman, conducted over fifty years of research in the Andes and taught courses in linguistics at the University of Florida. Furthermore, she wrote and contributed to several publications concerning Andean language and culture, including The Aymara Language in Its Social and Cultural Context and Jaqaru (Languages of the World).
