Photographs of an Italian Military Doctor in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italian Somaliland
Scope and Content
Collection of 54 photos from a doctor in the Italian military in Africa. The doctor is unidentified but possibly was a member of the fascist "Blackshirts" (Camicie Nere). The photos are dated 1928-1940 but the majority are from 1936-1938. All of the photos are described in Italian, but the handwriting is difficult to read. Places depicted include Ethiopia (Abyssinia), Italian Somaliland, Eritrea, Mogadishu, Dessie, Assab, and Asmara. A few show the military camp at Mai-Habar, and two of these include type-written descriptions on the versos. There are many photos of Italian soldiers, African people, buildings and cars. Although the photos span the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-1936) there are no images depicting battles.
