Scope and Content

The Ishill Collection spans 1890-1971 and includes correspondence, photographs, news clippings, serials and publications, woodblocks, and engravings. The correspondence relates to the printing of Ishill's books, political subjects, critiques, and commentaries. Also included are translations by his wife, Rose Freeman Ishill; letters and papers of John Barnhill, Alexis Fern, and the Romanian poet, Leon Feraru; letters between Voltairine De Cleyre and Dyer D. Lum; miscellaneous papers of William Barrett, Basil Dahl, and Peter Darien; and woodblocks, metal blocks, engravings, and photographs by Albert Daenens, Maurice Duvalet, Louis Moreau, and John Buckland Wright.

The collection is open for research. The Dyer D. Lum Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers have been photocopied and researchers may only use the photocopy reproductions.

Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Ishill was an anarchist, a printer and founder of the Oriole Press. Born in Rumania in 1888, he emigrated to the United States as a teenager and settled in New York City. As an anarchist, he joined the Ferrer Colony in Stelton, New Jersey in 1915. He began publishing in 1916. He married the poet, Rose Florence Freeman, in 1917. He founded the Oriole Press, for which he served as publisher, editor, printer, typographer, pressman, proofreader, and in some cases bookbinder. Throughout his career he published a wide variety of materials, including works by anarchists and radicals such as Emma Goldman, Peter Kropotkin, and Havelock Ellis. Ishill died in 1966.
