Mariano Bárcena Manuscript
Scope and Content
Manuscript written by Mariano Bárcena in 1895 entitled "El Hombre Prehistórico en México" (Prehistoric Man in Mexico). The 11-page document is written by Bárcena, while serving as Honorary Professor of Paleontology at the National Museum, and is addressed to Joaquin Baranda. It pertains to the discovery of prehistoric animal bones in an archeological site and possible human contact with said animals. Bárcena also discusses early man in the Mexican valley. He explains that tradition, codices, ancient chronicles and an 1881 Bulletin report a large volcanic eruption in ancient Mexico. The manuscript lists the research history of the bones, culminating in a paper and presentation to the Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural. It also mentions that the National Museum holds items that he excavated in 1879 and 1881, including human bones, ceramics, gold, etc.
