Records of the University of Florida Office of the Student Body President

 Series
Identifier: Series 001

Scope and Content

Series 1 contains records of the President of the Student Body of the University of Florida, spanning 1932 to 2010. The records contained in this series include correspondence, memos, reports, publications and ephemera, photographs and scrapbooks.

The first subseries, General Records and Reports, contains cumulative folders of cabinet and committee records as well as miscellaneous presidential correspondence and reports. Records from the years 1932 to 1960 are limited to Student Government annual reports (1932-1956) and lists of officers (1932-1965).

The second subseries, Presidential Binders, is arranged by presidential administration. The records of each president (with the exception of Park and Trickel) were originally stored in loose-leaf binders. The records were removed and placed in folders, but the original volume numbers and titles are recorded in the contents list and on the folders. Several volumes were missing. Robert Park, 1960-1961, is the first Student Body President for which there is ample record. The records of Park and William Trickel, 1963-1964, were bound by the Libraries, cataloged, and added to the University Collection under the title Student Government reports. These were subsequently removed from the University Collection and placed in this series. Park's records are arranged chronologically, but the first volume is missing. Trickel's records are organized by subject. However, no provision for file headings was made when the records were bound and letters on particular subjects are simply clumped together. Records for the Bullock (1961-1962) and Hendrick (1963-1964) administrations are scant. From Culpepper (1965-1966) onwards, the body of historical record increases substantially. The records of George Kramer (2000-2001), Marc Adler (2001-2002), Jamal Sowell (2004-2005), and John Boyles (2006-2007) are missing from the series.

The content and internal order of each administration's files varies. The records may include letters, memoranda, committee and cabinet reports, meeting minutes, publications, newspaper clippings, posters, memorabilia, and other record types. The records document the activities of the office of the Student Body President, including its interactions with Student Government agencies and University Administrators. This record series also documents significant campus events, which may include the budgeting of Student Activities and Service Fees; nominations and appointments to positions on Student Government boards and committees; operations of Student Government Productions, ACCENT, the J. Wayne Reitz Union, Student Health, and Lake Alice News; as well as reactions from the Student Government to incidents of crime on campus, political movements, and student activities. Also documented within this record series are the interactions of University of Florida's various Student Body Presidents with state- and nation-wide organizations for university student government leaders.

The third subseries, Scrapbooks and Photographs, contains two scrapbooks containing photographs of Student Body Presidents from 1909 to 1967, and loose photographs of Presidents from 1978 to 2004. Many of the prints housed in the scrapbooks are reproductions of images that may have originally been printed in the Seminole yearbooks. Some photographs have corresponding negatives housed in the University Archives Photograph Collection (UAPC); UAPC numbers are noted in pencil on the scrapbook pages. The loose photographs are a part of the UAPC Subject Files.

This is an ongoing series.
