Records of the University of Florida Office of Academic Affairs Related to Minorities and Women's Affairs
Scope and Content
Series 6 consists of records on the status of women and minority faculty at the University of Florida. The earlier records, 1969-1972, deal almost exclusively with African-American student enrollment and the recruitment of African-American faculty. These records were created from studies and work carried out by Assistant Dean Ernest St. Jacques. The remainder of the series is composed of files created by Irene Thompson, who served as Academic Equity Officer and Special Assistant to the Dean of Academic Affairs from January through August 1973, and Dorothy Nevill, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, 1973-1976.
Irene Thompson, a member of the English Department, reviewed salary inequities between men and women faculty and made recommendations for corrections, monitored possible gender discrimination in grant and scholarship funding by the University, assisted in searches for women candidates for faculty positions, sought improvements in career counseling of women students, and performed other tasks related to the status of women on campus. One of the major accomplishments of her term was a "counterparting" program that resulted in adjusted base salaries averaging 9% for fifty-eight women instructors. (See letter, Nevill to Betty Yu, January 15, 1974, in Miscellaneous Correspondence.) Dr. Thompson returned to the faculty and Dorothy Nevill assumed the title of Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs in September, 1973, with duties similar to Dr. Thompson. In 1976, Dr. Nevill returned to her position in the faculty of the Department of Psychology.
