Magic Lantern. A (wood) boxed MAGIC LANTERN or LANTERNA MAGICA (made in Great Britain - no date) with 23 1.5 x 6 - inch (multiple -image) glass slides included as part of the CINEMA and WIDESCREEN/CINERAMA holdings to represent the earliest form of theatrical projection. Considered the first projector, the MAGIC LANTERN was invented in the 1650s and soon became a traveling showman's instrument. During the 17th Century, wandering lanternists would put on a small-scale show in inns and castles, using a lantern lit with candles. Often these shows featured goblins and devils - hence the name the MAGIC LANTERN. The heyday of the lantern was the 19th Century, when models, such as this LANTERNA MAGICA, where found in homes, lodges, churches and schools. The mass produced items came in all sizes and shapes, from toy lanterns for children, to those used in large halls - huge brass-and-mahogany, double-lens machines lit with "limelight." The limelight was created when oxygen and hydrogen were squirted on a piece of limestone which turned incandescent once the gasses were lit, and produced a light as powerful as that in a modern movie projector. The lanterns projected hand colored slides on a full-sized screen As the slides (sometimes animated with exotic special effects) were projected in a theatrical magic lantern show, a live showman and musician provided the "soundtrack" and the audience joined in creating sound effects, playing horns and tambourines, clapping, cheering and booing. The MAGIC LANTERN experience was the earliest stage in what can now be considered motion picture history
